Many of the students can sometimes feel anxious, overwhelmed, or emotionally exhausted—even when they’re keeping up with classes on the outside. You might notice low motivation, self-doubt, or that small things feel harder than they used to. Some students reach out during times of transition, like starting or leaving college, changing majors, questioning identity, or feeling unsure about what comes next. Others want support processing difficult past or recent experiences that still affect their mood, focus, or sense of stability. I also work with a variety of students. Some managing stress, anxiety, navigating trauma, or are managing physical or ongoing health concerns causing them to feel the emotional weight that comes with it. Balancing school, expectations, and your own well-being can be especially tough when your body isn’t cooperating. In therapy, we’ll focus on both talking things through and building practical tools you can use in daily life. Sessions are collaborative and goal-focused, helping you better understand what’s going on while also finding ways to feel more steady, confident, and supported. You don’t need to have the “right” reason to start therapy—if something feels off or heavy, that’s enough.

Hi, thanks so much for taking an interest in my practice. It takes great courage and awareness to come to the decision to reach out for support. I see clients in my office in Cambridge, MA, near Davis Square, and in Melrose, MA, as well as by teletherapy/videochat. I specialize in helping people to free themselves from the 'silent conversation' that we have with ourselves throughout the day. By understanding how this conversation influences our thoughts, feelings, and actions, it is possible to adapt it to feel more empowered in life. It is my hope that your therapy experience will feel comforting, meaningful, real, and effective in getting to the heart of your core concerns. I work from an integrative framework in a warm and interactive environment, drawing from holistic, cognitive, and psychodynamic influences to help people to reclaim a sense of choice and authorship in their lives. My background includes more than 25 years in clinical healthcare, school, and community settings working therapeutically with individuals, couples, and groups on a wide-range of issues causing acute and chronic distress. You have been trying to get to a place where you can be authentically you. But currently, so much is defined or dominated by relational trauma or systemic oppression. We can work together to heal from trauma from the past, and work together on the current traumas that impact your life. If you are reading this, then you are looking for some help. I got you. Mind Matters Therapeutics is my brain child (see what I did there?). I taught for a decade, then I decided to go back to school to practice medicine. Best decision I ever made. The best part of all this? I know the ups, downs, inside-outs, stressors, and joys of being a student. I know the demands of college coursework. I have expertise in advocating for young adults in the educational setting regardless of the individual concern: Are you looking for continuation of care? I will pick up where your hometown doc left off. Keep you going strong. Are you looking for academic accommodations and advocacy? I will fight for you. And my paperwork is exceptional. Are you looking for someone to talk to? I specialize in trauma-focused therapy and OCD/anxiety type therapy. I can see you as much as you need to be seen, no limitations. Are you in need of just figuring it all out? My initial assessments are thorough; I leave no stone unturned. I take the time to listen to you. Always. You’re the captain of the ship, and you’re in control of your care. We will figure out the root issues at the jump. I got you. I will never dismiss you. I will be available to you. I will respond to your questions, needs, concerns, etc. in a timely way. I am on your team, I work for you. I sincerely care. I do this for my soul, not my pocket. I’d love to help. P.S. Don’t sweat the insurance. I know how to work with in and out-of-network insurance. My students pay little (if anything) to see me. Honest. Best, Des O’Doherty Mind Matters Therapeutics

College (and life in general) can be a lot. Whether you're adjusting to a big transition, feeling disconnected from yourself and those around you, or trying to make sense of things that have happened in your life, you don't have to figure it out alone. I’m a therapist who works with adolescents, young adults, and caregivers, with a special focus on supporting LGBTQ+ folks. I'm part of the LGBTQ community too. I work from a trauma-informed and anti-oppression lens, which means I pay attention to the full context of your life and how the world around you has shaped your experiences. My style is warm, collaborative, and down to earth. I bring humor when it's helpful, and I don't expect you to show up any particular way. You can be messy, unsure, overwhelmed. I’ll meet you there without judgment. Everyone deserves to feel safe and heard. Therapy with me is a place to slow down, get curious, and start making sense of what’s been hard while finding your way back to yourself. I take insurance and offer a free 15-minute call to see if we're a good fit. I look forward to hearing from you!

Balance in life can only be achieved when we start taking care of both our mental and physical health. I take an integrative approach to address clients' cognitive, emotional and physical needs. Whether that is challenging your anxious/ negative thoughts, changing disruptive relationship patterns, avoiding work burnout or taking steps towards better nutrition and physical routines, we will address the whole you each session. I have worked in the therapy field for ten years and have experience treating a variety of conditions including; anxiety, depression, life- transitions and trauma responses. I often see the medical field project a false advertisement that we can all be “fixed”. This can create a cycle of shame and discouragement when we try over and over again to find quick solutions for ourselves. I strive to challenge those inner critics and push my clients towards finding their true selves; living with self compassion and confidence. Please send an email to coordinate an initial free exploratory call. I will assess if myself or another clinician at Balanced Therapy Approach is a good fit for your current needs.

My style is direct, interactive, supportive and compassionate. I particularly enjoy working with older adolescents and adults who are experiencing difficult and challenging transitions in their lives. I have found that some people seek counseling for short term solutions, while others are seeking a longer, deeper, transformative experience. Some goals I have helped my patients achieve include: overcoming inhibitions about relationships or career, becoming better self-advocates, managing stressful life transitions, exercising more control over choices and actions, and mourning the loss of a loved one/significant relationship. I often use CBT, DBT, and ERP to help clients maximize functioning.

There are times in life when our usual coping strategies and support systems are not enough and it takes courage to seek help during times of pain and uncertainty. Navigating college and graduate school in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, racial inequities and tension, and the current political climate can certainly be one of these times and you don’t have to navigate it alone. Therapy can provide a safe space for support, learning, and meaningful change. I am a licensed psychologist who specializes in evidence-based treatments for adolescents and young adults who are seeking support to manage mood, anxiety, college mental health, life transitions, grief, motivation, sleep, and family concerns. I also specialize in working with family members or loved ones of individuals who have a diagnosis of serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. I am passionate about working with college and graduate students and have extensive experience and training working within the context of college mental health. My therapeutic style is warm, active, compassionate, and collaborative. I use a strengths-based approach and draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other evidence-based approaches to tailor treatment to the specific values, strengths, and goals of my clients. I utilize these approaches to help clients create a toolbox of coping skills and develop a deeper understanding of themselves. Every person has a unique identity, story, and experience, and deserves personalize therapy to fit their identities and strengths. My priority is to create a space where every client feels safe discussing painful thoughts and feelings, and supported as they work toward creating meaningful change in their lives. I applaud you for taking the first step in finding a therapist. I encourage you to reach out to me if you think I may be a good fit for you.
